Welcome to the learning module for the Medication Administration Simulation. The goal of this module is to increase your confidence and skill as you approach your first clinical rotation of medication administration and also to challenge your critical thinking. Although nursing students often become focused on the kinetic skills involved in the administration of patient medications, actually the more crucial element is the Critical Thinking that each nurse must engage in. At one time, nursing responsibilities were focused primarily on the adherence to correctly following "the six rights" of medication administration. Although following the "six rights" will assist in assuring that medication is safely administered as prescribed, much more is expected of nurses today than simply following the M.D.'s orders. Nurses are legally expected to be an active part of the health care team during medication administration. This includes knowing the actions of the pharmacological agent, evaluation of the appropriateness of the medication for the patient, monitoring for side effects and untoward events, drug interactions, and patient teaching. This simulation exercise will seek to allow you to refresh your knowledge of basic medication administration skills and offer the opportunity to implement critical thinking in the safe environment of the simulation clinical laboratory prior to actual patient contact in the hospital. This will assist you in anticipating what your nursing faculty will expect of you during your first patient encounter administering medications in the hospital environment.
It is crucial you come to the simulation clinical day prepared; just like you would for any clinical day. Please begin your preparation by clicking on the Learning Guide and Objectives tab. The information on this page will guide you in knowing what preparation will be required prior to your simulation clinical day. If you complete all the activities and reading assignments on this website you will be ready to have a productive and positive learning experience during the clinical simulation day.
It is required that you bring the medication administration worksheet to the clinical simulation. Anyone who does not have adequate knowledge of the medications will not be allowed to administer and will recieve a "0" for the clinical day. This preparation is to be done independently...
